Desktops, Laptops and Monitors: Dual Monitors

Purpose

This article will explain how to set up dual monitors on a desktop workstation. Dual monitors allows users to simultaneously display content on 2 windows.

Steps

Setting up Dual Monitors for Dell Optiplex 3020 and Desktops with separate graphics cards

  1. Identify the output display ports for the two monitors and the input display ports for the desktop. For the Dell Optiplex 3020, the input display ports are typically One DVI port and One Display Port. For reference on what display ports look like, use this KnowledgeBase article: https://steinhardt.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/207645153
  2. Find the appropriate cables and adapters to match the input and output.
  3. Set up both monitors 

Setting up Dual Monitors for older machines

  1. Identify the output display ports for the two monitors and the input display ports for the desktop. For older machines you will need to use a Legacy Splitter (see image below)  
  2. Find the appropriate cables and adapters to match the input and output.
  3. Set up both monitors 

Adjusting screen order and orientation

  1. Press the Windows Start button
  2. In the search bar, type in Adjust Screen Resolution and double-click the result
  3. Drag and drop the monitors under Change the appearance of your display to match the correct physical orientation

Tips

  • For the Optiplex 3020, you cannot use the built-in VGA display output in conjunction with the graphics card.
