Storage: Connect to S Drive



This article outlines how to connect to SteinStorage (the S Drive) from Microsoft Windows. Steinstorage is a network drive dedicated to Steinhardt.


  • For Windows Desktop
    1. If off campus or using NYU WiFi on campus, connect to VPN first
    2. Click the Start Menu
    3. Right Click Computer
    4. Select Map network drive…
    5. Enter the following information:
    6. Drive = S:
    7. Folder = \\
    8. Check Reconnect at logon
    9. Check Connect using different credentials if you are using a laptop
    10. Click Finish
    11. When prompted for credentials, enter the letters "ad" followed by a backslash, followed by your netID. In the password field, enter your NYU password. 
    12. Upon clicking OK the S: drive will appear in your Computer window. To view the S: drive, navigate to Start > Computer
  • For Mac or Windows Laptop
    1. If Off campus or using NYU WiFi on campus, connect to VPN first
    2. Open Finder
    3. Navigate to GO > Connect to Server
    4. Enter the Server Address for Mac: smb:// or enter the Server Address for Windows Laptop: \\\
    5. When prompted select registered user, then enter netID and password
    6. When prompted, select the share you need
    7. Click the + sign to save as Favorite Server
    8. Click Connect
    9. If prompted, enter your credentials as ad\NetID and your nyu password
    10. A mapped drive will appear in your Finder Window.

Advanced Troubleshooting

If on a Windows laptop and the drive doesn't connect, follow these steps to try and troubleshoot:

  1. Open registry editor by running regedit in the search bar
  2. Navigate to Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System11.JPG
  3. Create a new DWORD value and name it EnableLinkedConnections and set the hexidecimal value to 1
  4. Restart the computer
  5. Connect to the server directly by using \\\[SHARENAME] instead of \\\SteinStorage
